A new interpretation of a classic
The world-famous dance group Flying Steps presents its latest dance sensation: “Flying Hansel and Gretel”. After thrilling millions of viewers worldwide, the Flying Steps are now coming to Austria to delight audiences with their unique interpretation of the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The Austrian tour promises a spectacular combination of breathtaking acrobatics and contemporary dance that pushes the boundaries of what is possible. Cayenne brings the premiere production of MSK Flying Steps to Austria.
In 2023, to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Berlin dance company, the Flying Steps will present their next coup: “Flying Hansel and Gretel”. Just over a decade ago, Vartan Bassil and Christoph Hagel embarked on a global triumphal march with Flying Bach. Now they are reviving the Grimm Brothers’ classic in a surprisingly contemporary, powerful, fast-paced and visually powerful way!
The power of social media - a fairy tale brought into the here and now
How do you make the world’s most told fairy tale fly? Vartan Bassil has an answer that is as simple as it is striking: “The hunger of today’s children is the hunger for attention. And the seduction of the gingerbread house that they can’t resist is the power of social media.” The forest of the virtual world in which Hansel and Gretel get lost seems like a great promise: a fairytale world in which wishing seems to help. “Social media feeds children with something they can’t get enough of,” says Vartan Bassil, “and eats them up, skin and hair. Social media is eating our children!”
But the Flying Steps are not just taking off on a choreographic flight through the witches’ portal into the media world of the present day. The counter-world of the classical, the timelessness of the fairy tale remains their starting point and counterpoint. And so the fairy tale’s rapid journey goes in both directions, into today and yesterday, into the medial and the original in the electrifying field of tension between rap and opera, between the very latest and the very first stories ever told. “Ultimately,” summarises Christoph Hagel, “we are moving on the stage: the oldest virtual space in the world.”
A unique performance - a real hit with the audience
With their top international stars, the Flying Steps perform their Hansel and Gretel show at a breathtaking level of dance, supported by the best music from all worlds: Opera, hip-hop, pop and breakdance. Thanks to this inimitable synthesis invented by them, in which extremes meet, the old, “original German” fairy tale material becomes not only universal, but also a great, urgent story with its finger on the pulse and nerve of the times. “Flying Hansel and Gretel” promises to whisk the audience away into a world full of magic, suspense and first-class dance artistry. Flying Steps and their team are looking forward to making the Austrian tour an unforgettable experience for everyone.
About Flying Steps
Flying Steps is a world-renowned dance group known for its unique blend of breakdance, acrobatics and contemporary dance. The Flying Steps were founded in 1993 by Vartan Bassil and Kadir “Amigo” Memis in Berlin. Just one year later, they won the Battle of the Year (BOTY) for the first time, but it didn’t stop there. Another milestone in the history of the four-time breakdance world champions was the founding of the Flying Steps Academy in Berlin in 2007, which is now the largest urban dance school in Germany. In 2010, their first in-house production, Flying Bach, saw the light of day. This was followed shortly afterwards by the show Flying Illusion, which celebrated its premiere at the Tempodrom in Berlin in 2014. With both productions, the Flying Steps have thrilled over half a million spectators to date. The rest is history… More information on their official website at www.flyingsteps.com.
